Canadian port authorities merge

Monday, 10 June 2019 | 00:00

Canada’s government will amalgamate the Oshawa and Hamilton port authorities to form the Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority to better attract investment, develop the supply chain, and enhance the region’s global connectivity and competitiveness.

Effective 18 June, the amalgamation will maintain regular port operations in Hamilton and in Oshawa. The new port authority aims to strengthen economic opportunity in the region and will enable a coordinated approach to port development and contribute to broadening multimodal transportation options in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, said: “The Government of Canada remains committed to improving the country’s competitiveness in international trade and promoting employment opportunities for the middle class. The new Hamilton-Oshawa Port Authority will optimize the economic growth of the southern Ontario region.”

The Oshawa and Hamilton port authorities carry similar commodities including steel, project cargo and bulk cargo such as fertilizers, asphalt and grain. Cargo handled at both ports produces over CAD$6 billion in economic activity.

The amalgamation is directly aligned with Transportation 2030, a vision for Canada’s transportation system.

Hamilton Port Authority (HPA) president & CEO Ian Hamilton, said: “An integrated port authority on Lake Ontario can better market southern Ontario as an investment location for transportation-intensive industries, and improve goods movement fluidity in the GTHA, by rationalizing cargo routings and storage decisions.

“Coordinated planning will take a more strategic, regional view of marine-related land development opportunities, and regional thinking will improve the ability to position the ‘right infrastructure in the right place’ to serve southern Ontario, while getting more cargo off Ontario’s congested highways and onto marine transport.”
