Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan yesterday said his ministry has been working to launch Mongla Port in Khulna and Payra Port in Patuakhali to lessen the dependency on the country’s largest port in Chittagong.

“The world’s 20 big countries have been expressing their keen interest to invest in Payra Port,” Shahjahan said while addressing the inauguration ceremony of a newly-built Auction Shed of Chittagong Customs in Bandar Stadium area.

Addressing the event as the chief guest, the minister said BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will have to face trial for burning people to death in the name of blockade and political programmes.

As regards cocaine consignment, he said none of Chittagong Port was involved with the incident.

The Shipping minister also said the waterlogging problem in the port city will ease soon as the seaport is going to build a sluice gate on “Mohesh Khal” and set up a pump house with its own fund.

Presided over by the port authority’s Chairman, Rear Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed, member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Shipping Ministry MA Latif and Chittagong Customs House Commissioner Hossain Ahmed addressed the programme.

MA Latif said a bay terminal will be set up at Faujdarhat area under Sitakunda Upazila while vested interests are trying to use the place for residential business purpose.
