Gazprom’s gas exports to Europe up 6% in March so far vs February – Reuters calculations

Friday, 17 March 2023 | 01:00

Gazprom’s gas supplies to Europe were up 6% on a daily basis during the first 15 days of March compared to February levels, according to Reuters calculations based on shipment data from Gazprom’s daily transit volumes sent through Turkey and Ukraine.

After Russian gas supplies to Europe through the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline and Nord Stream were suspended last year, the only routes for Russian gas to Europe are via transit through the TurkStream pipeline through Turkey and through Ukraine.

The average daily amount of gas shipped to Europe through these routes increased to 71.9 million cubic metres (mcm) in the first 15 days of March, from an average of 67.5 mcm during February, Reuters calculated.

The total amount shipped to Europe in the 15-day period amounted to 1.08 billion cubic metres. Some 455 mcm – or 30.3 mcm per day – went through Turkey, with 623 mcm – or 41.6 mcm per day – going through Ukraine.

Data comes from Gazprom, which discloses daily volumes shipped through Ukraine, and the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSOG).
Gazprom stopped publishing statistics on its overall export volumes at the start of the year. It previously disclosed export levels twice a month.

The company did not respond to a request to comment.

Russian gas supplies to Europe remain down on December levels, when Gazprom was shipping around 81.9 mcm per day on average.

Since the start of the year, Gazprom has shipped 4.8 bcm of gas to Europe in total, according to Reuters calculations.

Last year Russia supplied a total of around 62 bcm of gas to Europe via various routes. Total exports to non-CIS countries, including China and Turkey, were down by almost 46% to 100.9 bcm in 2022, according to Gazprom’s own statistics.
