Black Sea Container Market Rises By 9.27% during Nine-Month Period of 2017

Black Sea container terminals of Ukraine, Romania, Russia, and Bulgaria handled 1 981 104 TEU in 9m 2017, including empty containers, excluding transshipment.

This review observes only full containers of the region – 1 453 924 TEU. Total growth achieved by these five countries for the period was 9,27% compared to the same period last year.

The laden container turnover was in all countries of the Black Sea region. In 9m 2017 largest increases were achieved by Russia, Georgia and Bulgaria – 18,85%, 18,85% and 6,23% respectively.

During this period, 54,19% of full containers handled were imported, with 45,81% of the volume being exported. It is estimated that laden containers share was 73,39% and empty containers share was 26,61%.

Import volumes to the aforementioned countries increased by 16,19% compared to 9m 2016. The highest import volume increase was shown by Russia and Ukraine – 25,86% and 18,40% respectively. In Georgia and Bulgaria there was an increase of 15,79% and 11,03% respectively. Exports from the region increased by 2,07%, mainly because of Georgian export volume increase of 35,40%. There was an increase of laden export volume in all countries of the region except Ukraine, it has suffered volume drop of 8,5%.

Russia had a record of laden import volume increase – 25,86%

Thus the percentage of laden volume handled by each country in 9m 2017 distributed as follows: Ukraine – 28,28%, Russia (Black Sea) – 26,72%, Romania – 24,23%, Georgia – 11,72%, Bulgaria – 9,04%.

The top-five container terminals of the region in 9m 2017 changed their positions in total volumes handled: DPW (Constanta, Romania) still was on the first place, APMT Poti (Georgia) overcame CTO (Odessa, Ukraine) and became second largest terminal at the Black Sea, while CTO (Odessa, Ukraine) moved to the fourth place, NUTEP (Novorossiysk, Russia) moved from the fourth to the third place, while NLE (Novorossyisk, Russia) remained fifth. All of these terminals except CTO (Ukraine) achieved volume growth in 9m 2017 compared to 9m 2016.

As for the leading carriers of the region, MAERSK still was a leader; while ARKAS overcame CMA CGM and became third largest carrier of the region. As a result of a merger between CSCL and COSCO, the united carrier became fifth largest at the Black Sea. TOP-5 carriers of the region were: MAERSK, MSC, ARKAS, CMA CGM and COSCOCS. These carriers controlled 73,88% of this market.

Lines’ shares at the Black Sea region by full containers turnover, 9m 2017


In 9m 2016 the total market share of Maersk and MSC was 44,77%, but in 9m 2017 it has increased by 0,54 p.p. to 45,31%. At the same time, the total share of CMA CGM and COSCOCS was 18,35% in 9m 2016, while in 9m 2017 it has decreased by 0,16 p.p. and stated 18,19%. It is also worth to note that in 9m 2017 against 9m 2016 CMA CGM has lost 1,60 p.p. of market share, while COSCOCS has increased its share by 1,44 p.p. and it has allowed COSCOCS to become the fifth largest carrier in the Black Sea region. PIL has suspended its activity at the Black Sea.
