Spain’s gas demand fell 8.6% in the first nine months of the year, extending the decline registered in the past two years, gas grid operator Enagas ENAG.MC said on Tuesday.
Milder temperatures in the winter led to a drop in demand to keep homes warm, while growing renewable supply meant less gas was burned to produce electricity, Chief Executive Arturo Gonzalo told analysts in a call to present the third-quarter results.
The data is in line with figures for Europe as a whole, he said.
Industrial demand rose by 3.1% in the same period thanks to heavy-usage sectors such as refining, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, he said.
