Reducing operational expenses – how to support the fleet in fuel efficient actions

Friday, 17 August 2012 | 00:00
Since the IMO adopted the SEEMP as an instrument to reduce CO2 emissions of the world merchant fleet (amendment to MARPOL Annex VI)many ship operators and owners are taking the SEEMP as a starting point to focus on fuel efficient operation of their fleet. Depending on various factors e.g. the vessel type, the company or trading areas there is a wide variety of measures which can be taken leading to significant fuel savings  and cost reductions. GL Academy has now developed three new seminars focusing on energy efficiency, in particular looking at voyage optimisation, hull & propulsion maintenance and refit options.
Shipping companies can read about a wide range of energy-saving measures these days from structural refit options to slow steaming and it is sometimes overwhelming. Therefore a systematic approach is important and helpful to build up a comprehensive knowledge about energy efficiency within the staff.
Inspired by the IMO model course “Energy Efficient Operation of Ships”, GL Academy decided last year to focus its seminar development on topics recommended by this model course since energy savings can be gained at all stages of a ship’s lifecycle.
The first seminar from thiscomprehensive package of new seminars focussing specifically on energy efficiency was “Application and Implementation of a SEEMP”. It has been conducted successfully all over the world since April and GL Academy is now offering three more seminars highlighting specific measures a company can consider in their efforts to be more energy efficient.
Everyone is talking about “energy efficiency” – but what are my options exactly?
Because of the widespread use of phrases like fuel saving, energy efficiency, energy saving and energy management companies are finding themselves trapped in a jungle of terminology, and are constantly being bombarded with various offers and opportunities, do’s & don’ts, all promising wonderful savings to be had using system X or technology Y.
With the SEEMP becoming mandatory next year, an overview of the different measures and options would be a good “next step” into this confusing field of possibilities to maintain the SEEMP onboard the vessels.
The first of the newly available seminars „Refit & Operational Options for Energy Efficiency” gives a comprehensive introduction into the complex and multidisciplinary field of energy efficiency. During this half day course participants will learn about a wide scope of fuel saving options and will be able to make a quick assessment of the most promising options for their own ship(s).
While this new seminar introduces this topic the two other seminars focus more on two specific areas where savings can be made – namely “Hull & Propulsion Maintenance” and “Voyage Optimisation”.
The seminar “Hull & Propulsion Maintenance” reviews aspects such as hull and propeller maintenance, antifouling and the propulsion system.
The second topic covers fuel efficient voyage planning taking into account safe operation, weather and contractual requirements. Specifically the tasks of system / tool selection, communication with crews and maintaining the SEEMP will be addressed.
GL Academy’s general approach is that the knowledge gained in our seminars can easily be transferred into the daily business of the participants. Accordingly these two new seminars also emphasise best business practice and the implementation of the proposed measures.
