Drewry: Port Throughput Index Rose 4.7% Year on Year

Friday, 26 January 2024 | 01:00

The Drewry Container Port Throughput Indices are a series of calendar adjusted volume growth/decline indices based on monthly throughput data for a sample of over 340 ports worldwide, representing over 80% of global volumes. The base point for the indices is January 2019 = 100.

Drewry has developed a nowcasting model that uses vessel capacity and terminal duration data (derived from our proprietary AIS model) to make short-term predictions of port throughput.

Drewry’s latest assessment – January 2024

  • Despite a MoM decline in volumes across North America and Oceania, robust growth in Asia led to a 3.1% MoM increase in the Global Container Port Throughput Index in November 2023 to 112.0 points, up 4.7% YoY. Drewry’s Nowcasting Model projected a 6.3% decline in December 2023 to 105 points, which is 0.7% above the December 2022 level.
  • The Greater China Container Port Throughput Index grew 5.6% MoM in November 2023 to reach 117.2 points, an increase of 3.4% YoY. Drewry’s Nowcasting Model indicates that the Index fell 7.4% MoM to 108.5 points, 1.2% higher than the December 2022 level.
  • The North American Container Port Throughput Index fell 2.5% MoM in November to 104.2 points, but was up 1.9% YoY. Drewry’s Nowcasting Model projects a further 6.6% MoM decline in the North American Port Throughput Index for December, but the rolling 12-month average growth rate was expected to have improved slightly to -10.9%, although this is still significantly lower than the global average growth rate of 0.1%.
  • The European Container Port Throughput Index rose slightly by 0.8% MoM to 102.1 points in November 2023, 7.0% higher than the previous year. However, Drewry’s Nowcasting Model indicated that the index fell back to 97.9 points in December 2023, reflecting a 4.1% MoM decrease.
