Japan’s Saudi Arabia crude oil imports increased in November 2023

Japan’s imports of Saudi Arabia’s crude oil increased in November 2023, reaching 33.27 million barrels, or 42.7 percent of total imports, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

During November, Japan imported 77.89 million barrels of oil, of which 94.6 percent, or 73.68 million barrels was supplied by Arab countries. This was provided by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman and Sudan, according to the data.

Japan imported about 29.27 million barrels from the UAE, or 37.6 percent of total imports, in November. Kuwait provided about 7 million barrels or 9 percent, and Qatar 3.62 million barrels or 4.7 percent. Japan imported nearly 500,000 barrels or 0.6 percent from Oman and 0.2 percent from Sudan.

With Japan’s ban on importing oil from Iran and Russia continuing in November, the rest of its imports came from the US at 3.1 percent, Central and South America at 1.4 percent, Southeast Asia at 0.4 percent, and Oceania at 0.3 percent.

Crude oil generates about a third of Japan’s energy needs.
