Green hydrogen corridor between Algeciras and Rotterdam takes shape

Monday, 19 June 2023 | 16:00

Norwegian chemical company Yara International and Spanish energy firm Cepsa have partnered to build a green hydrogen shipping corridor between the Spain’s Algeciras port and Netherlands’ Rotterdam port.

Yara Clean Ammonia will also supply Cepsa with ammonia derived from renewable sources. The goal is to establish a low-cost supply chain for the delivery of clean ammonia and clean hydrogen to maritime customers in Rotterdam and Central Europe.

Several ports and governments have backed green shipping corridors to decarbonise the shipping industry.

By 2050, Cepsa and Yara expect clean hydrogen to account for one-third of the fuel used in global land transport and 60% of maritime voyages.

Cepsa says the partnership marks a new step in its ambitious Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley project, which will have a capacity of 2 GW to produce 300,000 tons of green hydrogen. Cepsa launched a feasibility study for the project in January, working in partnership with Portuguese utility firm EDP.
