ENGINE: Americas Bunker Fuel Availability Outlook

Saturday, 04 March 2023 | 01:00

North America

All grades are getting tighter for prompt delivery dates in the Houston area and bunker locations off the Gulf Coast. A lead time of seven days is generally recommended to ensure full coverage from all suppliers in the Houston area.

The Houston Ship Channel has been closed throughout the week for all inbound and outbound vessel traffic, which has resulted in severe vessel congestion at both sides of the channel.

Prompt delivery of VLSFO and LSMGO can be tricky in Bolivar Roads. Deliveries there are subject to weather conditions and anchorage space, a source says.

Prompt VLSFO availability is tight in Beaumont. The earliest delivery dates with a supplier are about 7-13 days out.

In the Galveston Offshore Lightering Area (GOLA), bunker deliveries are expected to be suspended due to strong wind gusts in on Thursday and Friday and tomorrow, which can hold back scheduled deliveries.

Demand has been low for all grades in the West Coast ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, and suppliers are mostly able to accommodate deliveries for prompt dates.

HSFO and LSMGO availability for prompt dates is normal in the East Coast port of New York. One supplier can deliver LSMGO and HSFO stems with a lead time of 3-5 days. Another supplier can also deliver LSMGO stems in the port within three days.

Caribbean and Latin America

All grades are still tight for prompt dates in Panama’s Balboa and Cristobal. Some suppliers can deliver LSMGO and VLSFO stems in Balboa with a lead time of seven days, down from last week’s 10 days.

Available dates for prompt HSFO supply are generally patchier in Balboa, partly due to fewer suppliers offering the grade. One supplier needs at least nine days of lead time to deliver HSFO stems in the port.

VLSFO and LSMGO stems are available for prompt dates in Jamaica’s Kingston. One supplier can deliver with a lead time of 5-6 days.

VLSFO and LSMGO delivery is possible for prompt dates off Trinidad, but these offers are generally quoted on a subject to enquiry basis, a source says.

VLSFO availability is tight in Brazil’s Rio Grande. One supplier requires at least 13 days of lead time to deliver VLSFO stems.

Demand for bunker fuel in Argentina’s Zona Comun anchorage has been low for the past two weeks. Availability for prompt dates is also tight. One supplier can only deliver VLSFO stems at the anchorage after 9 March.
