ENGINE: Americas Bunker Fuel Availability Outlook

Friday, 30 April 2021 | 00:00
Bunker fuel oils are generally available in the US Gulf Coast region amid rising stock levels. Some bunker locations on the Gulf Coast like Corpus Christi have more limited bunker availability for certain dates.

US Gulf Coast residual fuel oil inventories have grown to eight-month highs as fuel oil production more than tripled on the week. A 3% stockbuild lifted the Gulf Coast inventories to 18.82 million bbls on 23 April, the latest Energy Information Administration (EIA) data shows.

Total US fuel oil inventories were broadly steady as the stockbuild on the Gulf Coast was countered by stockdraws on the East Coast and West Coast regions.

The country’s fuel oil demand has dropped slightly in April, with a weekly average of 219,000 b/d supplied, compared to 232,000 b/d in March. Supply is the EIA’s proxy for demand.

US production has been steady, with 205,000 b/d produced on a weekly average in April, and 208,000 b/d in March.

With less demand and steady production levels, US importers have reduced their imports to a weekly average of 112,000 b/d in April, down from 169,000 b/d in March.

LSMGO has run dry at the Offshore US Gulf Coast anchorage, and remains unavailable at the Galveston Fairway anchorage, where a supplier has stopped offering it. Some of the larger Gulf Coast ports such as Houston and New Orleans better availability
VLSFO and LSMGO continue to be in tight supply in Corpus Christi, and have recently tightened in Vancouver and Cristobal.
Availability of HSFO380 is tight at the New Orleans Outer Anchorage (NOLA), in Canada’s Vancouver and in Jamaica’s Kingston. HSFO380 is expected to remain tight at NOLA until next month.

Some Brazilian ports have had more limited VLSFO availability in the past two weeks. Supplies are still tight in Rio De Janeiro, Paranagua and Rio Grande. The busier Santos port has more readily available supplies and prices at significant discounts to other ports along the Brazilian coast.
