Americas Fuel Availability Outlook

Saturday, 12 April 2025 | 00:00

North America

Bunker supply remains steady in Houston, with no major disruptions reported. Lead times for VLSFO and LSMGO are within the usual 3-5 days, while for HSFO 7-10 days are recommended.

High wind gusts are expected over the weekend and could cause minor delivery delays.

The US Gulf is currently in fog season, which can lead Houston Ship Channel to close on and off and delay vessel traffic. Reduced visibility is making barge movements slower, and suppliers are urging vessels to allow for extra time when planning bunker procurement.

Bunker availability in New York is stable, with no particular tightness reported. Lead times for HSFO are at around 5-7 days, while VLSFO and LSMGO remain more readily available with 3-5-day lead times advised.

High wind gusts are expected to affect the New York area until 13 April, potentially causing disruptions. Barge readiness delays are anticipated due to these conditions.

Suppliers recommend securing fuel at least 3-5 days in advance.

Demand has ticked up slightly in the West Coast ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach this week. Availability remains good across fuel grades, though lead times for VLSFO and LSMGO have been extended to just under a week.

High wind gusts are forecast in the Port of Montreal in Canada, which may cause congestion and limit barge activity to daylight hours. Delays in bunker barge readiness are also possible.

Caribbean and Latin America

Bunker availability in Panama remains steady. VLSFO and LSMGO are available with 4-7 days of lead time, while HSFO typically requires longer.

Bunker fuel availability is good across all grades in Santa Marta, Barranquilla and Cartagena, with lead times for VLSFO and other products at 2-3 days. Demand for VLSFO has been strong.

A general strike has been called in Argentina for Thursday and half of Friday, Antares Ship Agents said. The Argentine Confederation of Unions (CGT) has called the strike action, and is backed by several other unions like the seamen’s union. Pilot, tugboat and mooring boats will not be available, Antares said.

Bunker operations in Zona Comun are expected to face periodic weather suspensions until Friday. VLSFO supply varies at the anchorage, with recommended lead times extending to 10-12 days.
