MARPOL – Amendments to Annex VI on Fuel Sampling and Testing

Sunday, 23 January 2022 | 21:00

The IMO Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) held its 75th Session remotely in November 2020. Amendments to MARPOL Annex VI to boost the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) “phase 3” requirements were adopted, including fuel sampling and testing. The revisions agreed are expected to apply from 1 April 2022.

The amendments to the fuel sampling regulations will require all-new ships with their keels laid on or after 1 April 2022 to be fully compliant with their delivery. Additionally, ships constructed before 1 April 2022 will need to fulfil these regulations by the ship’s first International Air Pollution Prevention (IAPP) renewal survey on or after 1 April 2023.
