In August, the Shanghai port, China’s top container seaport, exceeded 5.02 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), which sets a new monthly throughput record, according to the Shanghai Observer.

The throughput of the world-class hub demonstrates China’s foreign trade resilience and industrial upgrading, as well as the country’s supply chain strength, the report said.

As a key port for China’s exports, the data also indicated the Chinese economy’s steady performance despite increasing external uncertainty, per the Shanghai Observer.

According to the latest data released by Shanghai Customs, in the first seven months of 2025, Shanghai’s total import and export value reached 2.55 trillion yuan, up 3.4 percent year-on-year. In July alone, Shanghai’s exports grew by 8.5 percent and imports by 10.3 percent.

Besides the Port of Shanghai, a number of other ports in China also released their operational data for August.

The Port of Ningbo in East China’s Zhejiang Province said in a filing on Monday that it handled over 4.79 million TEUs in August, an increase of 9.2 percent year-on-year.

Nationwide, China’s foreign trade continued to grow in the January-July period, with total imports and exports reaching 25.7 trillion yuan ($3.58 trillion), up 3.5 percent year-on-year. Exports stood at 15.31 trillion yuan, up 7.3 percent.

According to a private-sector survey on Monday, China’s factory activity in August expanded at the quickest pace in five months on the back of rising new orders, Reuters reported.

The RatingDog China General Manufacturing PMI, compiled by S&P Global, rose to 50.5 in August from 49.5 in July, beating analysts’ expectations, Reuters reported.
