BAR Technologies and Brevik Engineering Collaborate on Wind-Assisted LCO2 Carrier Design

Thursday, 05 June 2025 | 13:00

In a forward-looking move that signals a new chapter for wind propulsion in carbon logistics, BAR Technologies and Brevik Engineering will unveil a joint concept for a liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier equipped with WindWings® at Nor-Shipping 2025.

The jointly developed concept, including full renderings and vessel specifications, will be unveiled at the CMET/BAR Technologies stand D05-18C on 4 June 2025. Attendees will gain insights into how WindWings® can help mitigate fuel costs and emissions even in carbon cargo transport, a sector poised for rapid growth as carbon capture and storage (CCS) adoption scales.

The project positions wind propulsion as a cornerstone technology not only for bulkers and tankers but for the next generation of vessels serving carbon capture and storage (CCS) infrastructure.

As regulatory pressure and climate urgency intensify, the maritime industry faces the dual challenge of decarbonising existing operations and supporting new carbon-related value chains. The BAR-Brevik collaboration responds to both, showcasing how WindWings®, a scalable, wind-assisted propulsion system (WAPS) enabling substantial emissions reductions, can be adapted to specialised ships such as LCO2 carriers.

“This partnership with Brevik shows that WindWings® technology is not limited to traditional sectors like bulkers and tankers. It’s a scalable, emissions-reducing solution that applies equally to emerging sectors, including carbon carriers,” said John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies. “As the industry faces the dual pressures of decarbonisation and rising fuel costs, our world-leading, three-element WindWings® system delivers wind-assisted propulsion that sets a new benchmark for practical efficiency and maritime sustainability. This is why we’re keen to collaborate with expert partners like Brevik, who share our commitment to engineering excellence and a low-carbon maritime future.”

Brevik Engineering, with a heritage in naval architecture stretching back to the Trosvik Shipyard of 1917, brings deep experience in ship design across all phases, from feasibility to construction. The collaboration integrates Brevik’s precision design approach with BAR Technologies’ performance-led wind propulsion systems.

“This concept vessel highlights our commitment to progressive engineering,” said Evert Grødal, Managing Director at Brevik Engineering. “Together with BAR Technologies, we’re showing how ship design can support the emerging carbon economy without compromising sustainability.”
