SulNOx scores in Chile with new patent

Thursday, 26 September 2024 | 00:00

SulNOx, the green fueltech group active in shipping, mining and road transport, has gained a valuable patent in Chile.

The UK-listed company, which helps industry reduce emissions, lower fuel costs and meet sustainability targets, adds the patent to others granted for the US, Europe, Eurasia, Georgia, South Africa, Hong Kong, China and Indonesia.

They cover a range of versions of SulNOx conditioners which emulsify water, while increasing lubricity and oxygen availability to fuel, making it burn cleanly and more efficiently.

Chile is an important new market for SulNOx, extending the group’s reach among global customers and industry sectors to South America for the first time.

It is a global player in mining, producing 24% of the world’s copper and 30% of lithium (Source: US International Trade Administration, 2023). In addition, Chile is a major maritime country, its freight port at San Antonio serving as a significant facility in the south Pacific. The country’s largest trading partners are, respectively, China and the US.

Santiago, Chile’s capital city, is the world’s second most polluted city (Source: World Air Quality Index, 2024). Situated in a valley, Santiago’s toxic gases are easily trapped in the city bowl, with high levels of particulate matter in the air.

The present PM2.5 concentration is 2.5 times the World Health Organisation’s recommended limit. Air pollution has caused an estimated 4,000 deaths annually in Santiago in recent years.

Ben Richardson, CEO of SulNOx, commented:

“Chile is a major addition to our growing patent estate, representing a unique combined opportunity: enhanced access, supported by intellectual property, to a huge mining sector emitting high levels of greenhouse gases, as well as the prospect for helping to tackle urban air pollution that is among the world’s worst. This exciting new development equips us well to grow our revenue pipeline in an entirely new continent for SulNOx.”

The company has made very significant progress in shipping trials and growing revenues, signing major pilots in Asia and Europe with Teekay Corporation, Spring Marine, Marfin and Peninsula Yacht Services.

A key generator trial recently showed fuel usage lowered by 15%, while emissions were slashed.

SulNOx shares have risen more than 800% to 37.5p in 18 months.
