Trelleborg Advances Sustainability Vision with Planned Series of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)

Thursday, 25 September 2025 | 13:00

Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure, a global leader in solutions for the marine, port and infrastructure sectors, takes a pivotal step in its broader sustainability initiative with the publication of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) within its polymer-based product portfolio, raising the bar for transparency and environmental responsibility in the industry.

The EPD focusing on Trelleborg's Gina gaskets, a critical solution for tunnel sealing systems, provides detailed insights into their environmental impact across the product’s full lifecycle. This environmental assessment, verified under the rigorous MRPI®-EPD protocol, ensures a reliable and transparent evaluation of environmental performance across all lifecycle stages. It highlights several key findings, including Gina gaskets' exceptional longevity of 170-200 years and complete transparency regarding its material composition and manufacturing processes. Independently verified according to EN15804+A2 standards, the assessment covers three popular variants of the gasket: soft (Shore 40A), medium (Shore 50A) and hard (Shore 60A), adhering to international standards for lifecycle assessment.

“Over the past few years, we've been working hard to innovate and develop solutions that drive a more sustainable future. Today, we're pleased to celebrate a significant milestone in this journey,” said Richard Hepworth, Business Unit President at Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure. “The publication of our first EPD for the Gina gasket ensures that customers benefit from outstanding performance while gaining clear insights into their environmental impact. We're also scaling up efforts to provide similar third-party verified EPDs across our other polymer-based product portfolio. This initiative aligns with Trelleborg’s wider sustainability strategy, which focuses on reducing emissions, and sourcing materials responsibly. Through all these efforts, we aim to help our customers meet their environmental goals.”

These Gina gaskets have a proven track record in landmark infrastructure projects worldwide, demonstrating their reliability in critical applications.

“Stakeholders across sectors are increasingly demanding reliable environmental data to make informed decisions,” said Mishra Kumar, Business Unit Director – Technology and Innovation at Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure. “This EPD is a significant step forward, not only for Trelleborg but for the industry as a whole, as we work towards greater sustainability and transparency in our products.”

Besides showcasing the exceptional longevity of Gina gaskets, which significantly reduces their lifetime environmental impact, the report also provides crucial data on carbon footprint, resource usage and ecosystem impacts. The EPD for Gina gaskets, manufactured at Trelleborg’s Qingdao facility in China, also examines transportation impacts to global markets. This comprehensive analysis supports engineers, specifiers and sustainability managers in evidence-based decision-making and project certification processes.

The complete report is now available for download on Trelleborg's website and international EPD databases. As additional product EPDs are completed, they will form a comprehensive resource for stakeholders seeking evidence-based environmental information. Trelleborg’s sustainability specialists are available to help customers interpret this environmental data and leverage it for project certifications and sustainability reporting requirements.
