Red Sea Gateway Terminal International (RSGTI) and the Port of Tadjourah have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for investment in and the operation and management of the multipurpose facility located at the nexus of the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea, on the East African Coast. The MOU was signed by the Chairman of the Port of Tadjourah, Kamil Mohamed Gorah, and RSGTI Director of Global Investments Gagan Seksaria, in a ceremony presided over by the Chairman of the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority, Aboubaker Omar Hadi. This strategic partnership will enhance the port’s role as a key gateway for all cargo types not only for Djibouti but also for the vast Ethiopian hinterland, supporting regional trade and economic development.
The Port of Tadjourah opened in 2017 to facilitate the export of potash mainly from the Danakil depression in Ethiopia and handle general cargo for the region such as coal, steel, liquified petroleum gas, fertilizer and agricultural products. Covering 400,000 square meters, the Port of Tadjourah offers two berths with a combined length of 485 meters, with an alongside depth of over 14 meters, and a 190 meter-long Ro/Ro quay with an annual capacity of five millions tons of general cargo. The port, situated on the northern coast of the Gulf of Tadjourah, is connected with a newly developed road to key trade nodes in Ethiopia and to Addis Ababa at a road distance similar to that from the Port of Djibouti.
RSGT International is the affiliate and global investment arm of Jeddah-based Red Sea Gateway Terminal (RSGT), the largest terminal operator in Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Arabia’s only international terminal operating company. RSGTI is a portfolio company of the USD 925 billion Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.
“We look forward to working closely with our new partners in Djibouti to upgrade the facilities and improve the efficiency of operations at the Port of Tadjourah, excellently located at the confluence of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in strategic proximity to our flagship operations at Jeddah, to facilitate the port’s emergence as a key node in the Red Sea and East African supply chains”, stated RSGTI CEO Jens O. Floe. In 2023 RSGTI signed a 22-year concession for the operation of the Patenga Container Terminal at Chittagong Port in Bangladesh, becoming the first international terminal operating company in the South Asian nation. “We are extremely proud to sign this MOU with the Port of Tadjourah in Djibouti, the only viable trade gateway to the large and growing Ethiopian market of over 130 million people. This partnership is representative of RSGTI’s global investment strategy, focusing on container and multi-purpose terminals in critical markets across Africa, Asia and other developing regions globally”, noted Mr. Seksaria.
