NYK Joint Venture to Conduct EV Truck Transportation Tests in China Working with Partners to Examine Battery Risks

Thursday, 13 July 2023 | 12:00

From July 2023, NYK Zhenhua Logistics (Tianjin) Co. Ltd. (NYK Zhenhua),* an NYK joint venture, will start a demonstration test to examine potential issues involving a large EV (electronic vehicle) truck. This test will be performed jointly with Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (China) Ltd. (MSIC)** and Panasonic Navinfo Mobility Technology Service (Beijing) Co. Ltd. (Panasonic Navinfo).

Background
EVs have become more common worldwide amid the trend toward decarbonization, while safety and economic risks caused by battery abnormalities and deterioration have become issues that need to be urgently resolved. Especially in China, the world’s largest EV market, this matter has become a concern for companies such as logistics providers, which are increasingly using more of these vehicles.

Project Overview
The three companies will conduct a demonstration test from July 2023 to January 2024. During that time, NYK Zhenhua will introduce a large EV truck to transport auto parts between factories in Tianjin. The company will then utilize BetteRRRy, a battery-analysis cloud service provided by Panasonic Navinfo, to verify the environmental contribution, economic efficiency, and safety of the EV truck. Concurrently, NYK Zhenhua will provide the EV truck’s battery-status data to MSIC through BetteRRRy.

Future Developments
Through this demonstration test, NYK Zhenhua will verify the effectiveness of an EV truck and proceed to further consider their introduction within China, whilst examining the possibility of adopting solutions and insurance products for addressing battery issues. In the future, the NYK Group aims to utilize know-how gained through this demonstration test in areas other than China, and will further promote decarbonization in the auto parts transportation business.

Participation in this demonstration test is part of business activities related to Sail GREEN, a brand that emphasizes NYK’s efforts to reduce GHG emissions through the transport of goods and contribute to the eco-friendly supply chains of customers, regardless of the mode of transport (e.g., by sea or land, through terminals, etc.).
