Pelabuhan Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd (PTP), a member of MMC Group has successfully renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) to enhance collaboration in talent development, research and development and sharing of expertise in maritime technology, port management and other related fields of interest as part of the efforts in boosting the maritime sector in Malaysia.
The signing ceremony was held at Port Briefing Room, Wisma A PTP between Marco Neelsen, Chief Executive Officer of PTP and Professor Dato` Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar, Vice-Chancellor, UMT.
PTP Chief Executive Officer, Marco Neelsen in his statement remarked that “The signing of Memorandum of Understanding between UMT and PTP marks another important milestone in PTP’s commitment towards the development of local talents and would help us to further improve our talent development programs and increase the capacity and capabilities of our workforce in PTP and Malaysia in general”.
“Over the past 5 years, both UMT and PTP have successfully collaborated and delivered Work Based Learning (WBL) programs for internship as well as industry attachment programs. Through this, we have identified and absorbed the UMT students into our Port Operations Planning Apprentice (POPA) program since 2017.”
Speaking after the signing event, UMT’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Dato` Dr. Mazlan Abd Ghaffar said the collaboration between UMT and PTP is a golden opportunity for UMT academicians to lead the cutting-edge issue related to maritime technology and port management. Mutually share expertise will also be extended for academic purposes towards training module development in relation to port industry”.
Nur Afini Ishak who was a former student of UMT said she participated in the Port Operations Planning Apprentice (POPA) program as part of the collaboration between PTP and MOU to build a ready talent pipeline for port industry’s niche technical or functional areas, specifically for PTP.
“I am grateful to kickstart my career through the program and was rightfully exposed to the port operation and business during my training period via various developments project internally. Through the projects, I worked with various people, and it helped to boost my confidence in conducting and executing all the tasks assigned.”
Strategic collaboration with institutions of higher learning and government agencies are part of PTP’s initiatives towards enhancing the competency level and skills of its current and future staff. It is also part of the company’s commitment under the “Social” agenda of Environment Social and Governance (ESG) strategy.
Addressing the social factors of ESG is crucial for PTP in becoming a sustainable and responsible organization. This involves actively working to improve diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) within the company, as well as unleashing the potential of the employees through training and development opportunities.
