CNOOC says new South China Sea gas field has over 100 bcm proven reserves

Thursday, 08 August 2024 | 00:00

China’s CNOOC Ltd. said on Wednesday its deepwater Lingshui 36-1 gas field in the South China Sea has proven gas in place of more than 100 billion cubic metres.

The state-run offshore oil and gas specialist made the announcement after Chinese government certified the size of the reserve.

Lingshui 36-1 is located in the southern portion of the Central Sag, Qiongdongnan Basin, with an average water depth of approximately 1,500 metres.

The burial depth of the gas field is 210 metres, making it a typical ultra-shallow gas play in ultra-deep water, CNOOC said,

Tests at Lingshui 36-1 show it can produce more than 10 million cubic metres of gas a day, the company said in June.

Lingshui 36-1 adds to previous large natural gas finds such as Lingshui 17-2, Baodao 21-1 and Liwan 3-1, bringing CNOOC’s total proven gas in place in the South China Sea to more than one trillion cubic metres.
