Larnaca port workers on a 24-hour strike

Tuesday, 25 March 2025 | 01:00

Larnaca port dockers went on a 24-hour warning strike on Monday to protest over the unloading procedures at the port.

The workers blocked the entrance and exit of the port of Larnaca for 30 minutes.

Due to the procedure followed at the port dockers say they are losing income, and their safety is being threatened. The current situation affects approximately 80 drivers.

The dockers say roads and cranes at the port are unsafe and they are worried about their safety. They also expressed concerns that when they receive a larger cargo they get delayed for two hours, losing their daily wages.

“The problems at Larnaca port have been ongoing since the Port Authority took over. The loading process needs to be repeated two or three times to unload the cargo,” port driver Nikos Vlasiou said.

“We are not in the mood to go back and forth in the port. We have to receive the cargo we are supposed to.”

The drivers already sent a warning to a lawyer in February and while the Port Authority received the notice both in Larnaca and Nicosia, “We haven’t received any response” Vlasiou said.

The dockers said the strike was a warning and on Wednesday they will return to work normally. However, if the authorities don’t take the appropriate measures on Monday they would go on a 48-hour strike until Wednesday.
