Russian natural gas output down 9.5% in Jan-Feb – newspaper

Wednesday, 29 March 2023 | 16:00

Production of natural gas in Russia declined by 9.5% year on year to 119.4 billion cubic metres (bcm) in January and February, Vedomosti newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing two sources familiar with energy ministry data.

Russian gas output has been on a downward trend, having shrunk by almost 12% in 2022, due to fallout from what Moscow calls its “special military operation in Ukraine” and Europe’s moves to diversify its sources of energy away from Russia.

The newspaper said that gas output fell by 8.7% last month to 56.7 bcm, while gas production in January was down 9.7% to 62.7 bcm.

One of the sources cited by Vedomosti said Kremlin-controlled energy giant Gazprom GAZP contributed most to the decline.
