The world’s largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier and refueling vessel, Haiyang Shiyou 301, completed the largest single ship-to-ship LNG single refueling mission to date in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Tuesday.

The 30,000-cubic-meter LNG carrier owned by Chinese state oil major CNOOC, provided LNG bunkering service to a large-size German container vessel by injecting 4,300 tons of LNG to the vessel in a process of 8.5 hours during cargo loading and unloading operations.

The refuel marks the largest single refueling in Hong Kong, effectively boosting the port’s refueling service capabilities, CNOOC said in a statement sent to the Global Times on Tuesday.

Hong Kong is a major international voyage LNG bunkering spot, with over 5,000 vessels making port calls each year.

LNG bunkering involves supplying liquefied natural gas to ships for fuel, a practice gaining momentum due to its environmental benefits compared with traditional marine fuels.

Currently, CNOOC holds international bunkering permits for at seven Chinese ports, including Shenzhen in South China’s Guangdong Province and Ningbo in East China’s Zhejiang Province.
