ENGINE: Americas Bunker Fuel Availability Outlook

Tuesday, 11 April 2023 | 12:00

North America
Very prompt VLSFO and LSMGO availability is normal in Houston. Most suppliers can deliver the grades within two days of lead time, down from last week’s six days. However, availability of HSFO stems can be tight for prompt delivery dates in Houston. A supplier can deliver the stems with eight days of lead time, and a few others need more than 10 days.

Securing prompt LSMGO stems are tough in Bolivar Roads. But VLSFO stems can be secured with a lead time of two days.
Bunker operations have been suspended in the Galveston Offshore Lightering Area (GOLA) due to strong wind gusts. Operations are expected to resume with calmer weather later on Thursday and deliveries might be allowed to resume on a case-by-case basis.
The weather suspensions have pushed back delivery schedules. One supplier is only able to offer HSFO and LSMGO stems for delivery in GOLA after 17 April.

Very prompt supply of VLSFO and LSMGO is possible at the New Orleans Outer Anchorage (NOLA). Two suppliers can deliver stems within two days, down from last week’s recommended lead times of seven days.
The West Coast port of Los Angeles continues to grapple with sluggish demand. Demand for VLSFO and LSMGO has been slightly better in Long Beach for dates further out and availability of these grades has been normal.
Los Angeles’ LSMGO price has slumped to multi-month lows and is priced at steep discounts to Houston and other regional ports.
Similarly, demand has been low in the East Coast port of New York, where all grades can be secured immediately.

Caribbean and Latin America
Prompt availability of VLSFO and LSMGO remains normal in Panama’s Balboa and Cristobal, with a recommended lead time of 5-6 days. However, demand has been significantly lower in the Panamanian ports.
Similarly, demand has been low in Jamaica’s Kingston and the Bahamas’ Freeport. Suppliers are able to offer stems for prompt dates.
Strong wind gusts of up to 32 knots are forecast off Trinidad. But prompt delivery of VLSFO and LSMGO seems to be normal for the area. Most suppliers are able to deliver the stems within 2-4 days of lead time.

Prompt availability of LSMGO is normal in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro. A supplier can deliver stems with a lead time of six days.
Demand for VLSFO and LSMGO has been better in Zona Comun for the past two weeks compared to most other Americas ports. Most suppliers are able to deliver the two fuel grades on prompt dates as well as dates further out.
