Black Sea Container Market: A total of 617,853 were handled during first quarter

Black Sea container terminals of Ukraine, Romania, Russia, and Bulgaria handled 617 853 TEU in Q1 2015, including empty containers, excluding transshipment.  This review observes only full containers of the region – 438 850 TEU. Total drop suffered by these five countries for the period is 7,16% compared to the same period last year.

The largest increases were in Georgia, Bulgaria and Romania. After Q1 2015 Ukraine and Russia suffered 26,64% and 14,74% drop of laden container turnover respectively.   

















During this period, 57,85% of full containers handled were imported, with 42,15% of the volume being exported. It is estimated that 71,03% of the containers were full and 28,97% were empties.

Export volumes from the aforementioned countries decreased by 2,48% relative to Q1 2014. The highest export volume drop was shown by Russia – 19,81% and Ukraine – 16,61%. In Georgia, Bulgaria and Romania there was an increase, moreover Georgia increased its export volume by 96%. Imports to the region decreased by 10,29%, mainly because of Ukrainian import volume drop -34,53%. Import volumes for the period increased in all countries of the region except Ukraine and Russia.

Thus the percentage of laden volume handled by each country in Q1 2015 distributed as follows:  Ukraine – 25,90%, Russia (Black Sea) – 24,70%, Romania – 24,48%, Georgia – 15,97%, Bulgaria – 8,95%.

The top-five container terminals of the region in Q1 2015 changed their positions in total volumes handled: DPW (Constanta, Romania) still was on the first place, HPC Ukraine (Odessa, Ukraine) moved from the fourth to the fifth position, APMT Poti (Georgia) still was on the second place, NLE (Novorossyisk, Russia) moved from third to fourth position and NUTEP (Novorossiysk, Russia) moved from fifth to third place.  All of them showed volume drop with the exception of APMT Poti (Georgia).

As for the Lines in the region, the leaders remained the same: MSC, Maersk Line, CMA CGM, ZIM and ARKAS. Mentioned carriers control 73,25% of this market.

Starting from the middle of 2014 the service of former G6 was re-built (Hapag Lloyd, OOCL, MOL, NYK, HMM, APL).  Thus, OOCL moved to ABX service (ZIM) and G6 alliance became G5. In Q1 2014 G6 members controlled 9,03% of total market share, however in Q1 2015 G5 members controlled only 5,21% of total market share.
In Q1 2015 2M (Maersk and MSC) and Ocean Three (CMA CGM, CSCL, UASC) alliances started their activity in the Black Sea region. In Q1 2014 total market share of Maersk and MSC was 46,22%, but in Q1 2015 it dropped by 0,79 p.p. to 45,43%. In Q1 2014 total market share of Ocean Three alliance members was 12,64%, but in Q1 2015 it grown by 3,89 p.p. to 16,53%.
