The big challenge for shipping: balancing fuel consumption and NOx emissions
Monday, 09 July 2012 | 00:00
Rapid increases in the cost of fuel, has reduction of operational costs and improved environmental performance at the top of every shipping company's priorities. Throughout the marine
sector, the focus is on efficiency and energy consumption, more than
ever before.A recent development brings to the market a unique portable,
user friendly system (E.M.D.S.) that provides NOx emissions in g / kWh,
as specified in Annex VI of MARPOL,
in a few minutes with minimal equipment and without any intervention and the following additional information for the main engine and generators:
• Power
• Fuel Consumption
• Exhaust emissions
• Total and specific rates for CO, CO2 and O2 (SO2 optional).
• NOx emissions Protocol in accordance with Marpol Annex-VI.
In addition to the above, through the integrated diagnostic software, information of the engine, the condition of the cylinders and sub-systems becomes available to be used for fuel saving, reduction of repair/maintenance time and cost of replacement parts.
This is ensured through the recognition of operating problems at an early stage, before any negative consequences take place.
With the E.M.D.S. system the operators can optimize their main engines and generators so that they can have maximum savings and comply with the emission limits.
The E.M.D.S. is certified for MARPOL ANNEX VI compliance by Germanischer Lloyd and is available from Sigma Hellas Ltd.
