Oil production in US Gulf of Mexico recovers post Hurricane Helene

Tuesday, 01 October 2024 | 00:00

Only 3% of crude oil and 1% of natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico remained shut down in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE) said on Sunday.

Currently, energy producers are left with 59,000 barrels per day of oil production and nearly 17 million cubic feet of natural gas output shut in from Gulf waters, the bureau added.

Oil and gas producers began shutting their offshore production on Tuesday, as Helene moved through the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Oil and natural gas production losses reached a peak of 511,000 barrels on Wednesday.

“Based on data from offshore operator reports submitted as of 11:30 a.m. CDT today, personnel have been evacuated from a total of three production platforms, 0.81% of the 371 manned platforms in the Gulf of Mexico,” the BSEE said.
