Romania’s seaports cargo traffic up 6.3 pct last year on higher imports

Romania’s seaports handled 49.1 million tonnes of cargo in 2018, up 6.3 percent on the year, Russia being the main trading partner of the local ports, National Institute of Statistics (INS) data show.

The country has seven maritime ports, Constanta being the largest, with a share of 80.5 percent of Romania’s maritime cargo traffic in 2018.

Import cargo traffic rose by 13.2 percent and export cargo traffic rose by 0.4 percent during the year.

Major commodities which registered high cargo traffic in 2018 include agricultural products (61.4 percent of exports) and coal, petroleum, oil & lubricants (39.3 percent of imports).

The main international partners of Romania in cargo traffic are Russia (21 percent), Turkey (14.1 percent), Egypt (6.2 percent), Spain (5.5 percent) and Greece (4.5 percent), according to official data.
