Don’t overstep the digitalisation mark

Wednesday, 14 November 2018 | 12:00

Ports need to learn to walk before they can run when it comes to adopting digitalisation and technology solutions, a specialist has warned.

José María Escribano Serrano, head of the port unit at Spanish information technology and defence systems company Indra, cautioned against investing in technology solutions “because it is fashionable”.

Only those ports that are already on a digital pathway can evolve to become connected ports, then to smart ports and then to collaborated ports, he added.

That said, digitalisation solutions will play “a very important role in ports’ successes”, according to Carlos Zepeda, business analyst/project leader at the Port of Rotterdam International. “We believe that with digital tools we can resolve some of the challenges that ports face to create a sustainable and complete supply chain,” he said.

Both were speaking at the recent Association of American Port Authorities that took place in Chile.
