Sea Port St. Petersburg increases investments in environmental sustainability

Thursday, 15 August 2019 | 00:00

Since the beginning of 2019, almost RUB 30 million have been spent on environmental protection measures by Sea Port St. Petersburg JSC (SP SPB), which is 69% more than a year earlier.

This spending growth is attributed primarily to upgrade of environmental protection equipment and modernization of environmental facilities at the port.

In order to protect the atmosphere at SP SPB, work was carried out to ensure the safe handling of bulk cargo. The company earmarked funds for the purchase of a vacuum sweeper, an additional local dust suppression system for cargo holds, and an ecological bunker vessel. Part of the acquired equipment have already been commissioned.

Besides, the company also was monitoring the quality of environment. Control measurements at the border of the sanitary protection zone were performed by specialists of two certified laboratories. Additionally, monitoring was carried out by supervisory authorities, including the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-Being in St. Petersburg (Rospotrebnadzor).

The survey results has proved that the presence of pollutants in the atmosphere of the territories adjacent to the port is significantly lower than the maximum permissible standards and does not exceed citywide indicators.

To protect water resources in the port, work continued on the implementation of the program of water disposal system modernization. In particular, the company overhauled some sections of the sewage system with a total length of more than 400 meters. SP SPB also increased funding of works for wastewater treatment improvement.
