Cold storage facility to help Portland compete with other ports

Thursday, 03 September 2015 | 14:16
The largest cold storage company in the world will be building a new warehouse along the Portland waterfront.

The refrigerated facility is expected to allow Portland to compete with other ports along the eastern seaboard, while benefiting Maine's food and beverage industries. The state is leasing land it owns to Ameri Cold to build the warehouse.

Ameri Cold already runs a cold storage facility in Portland on Read Street. But it is 63-years old. The new facility will be modern and its location will allow customers to ship their products by ship, train or truck.

"This is a great opportunity for businesses in Maine to take advantage of the transportation assets that we've been investing in in the Port of Portland", said John Henshaw of the Maine Port Authority.

A lack of refrigeration space in Maine means many food producers have to ship their products out of state for storage. The new warehouse will allow those products to remain here and ship directly from Maine, saving companies a lot of money in transportation costs.

The facility is expected to open in 2017.
