Ctg Port on way to modernisation

Chattogram Port, the prime sea port of the country, is on the road to modernization.

In the tenure of the incumbent government, the port is being developed through procuring equipment and constructing new terminals.
After 131 years of Chattogram Port Authority (CPA), the government is going to solve crisis centring the port, concerned sources said.
Meanwhile, Chattogram Port handled 28, 08,554 TEUs of containers in the last fiscal (2017-18), and 25, 03,471 in the previous fiscal (2016-17).

The growth in container handling is 12.19 percent. The CPA handled 3, 05,083 more containers in 2017-18 fiscal than in 2016-17.
Besides, Chattogram Port set a new record in container handling in March of the current year, one TEU container per minute at the number 13 berth of the port. The port operators handled 3654 containers within 72 hours at the berth, and set the new record, concerned sources said.

Jafar Alam, member of CPA said, “We have handled a record number of containers in the 2017-18 fiscal. Chattogram Port has handled 9 crore 23 lakh and 228 MTs of cargo, including container and bulk cargo in 2017-18 fiscal, while we had handled 7 crore 99 lakh 519 MTs of cargo including container and bulk cargo in 2016-17 fiscal.

Total increase in handling of container and bulk cargo is 1 crore 29 lakh 40 thousand 709 MT.

The CPA has already procured many modern pieces of equipment to increase cargo-handling facilities at the jetties. Chairman of CPA Commodore Zulfikar Aziz said, “Chattogram Port is the heart of the economy of Bangladesh. So, we need the development of the Port to increase the export and import of our country.”

He said, “Following vision 2021 of the incumbent government, the Chattogram Port will be the friendliest one for users within the current year.”

He said, ‘management of the increased handling of containers is posing a big challenge for the CPA now. We have already undertaken many short term, mid-term and long term plans to make the Chattogram Port a most modern one to meet the challenges of the future.”
Commodore Zulfikar Aziz also said, “As per directives of the government, we have decided to start the New-mooring Container Terminal (NCT) by procuring more equipment. Meanwhile, we have already procured 9 Rubber Tier Gantry Cranes, 4 Straddle Carriers, 5 container movers, one rail mounted gantry crane etc, in this connection.

Besides, some more new equipment including 3 straddle carriers will be included in the CPA very soon.”

He said, “we have already opened LC for procuring 6 Ship to shore Gantry Cranes, 2 RTG and one Mobile Harbor Crane. Besides, we will sign agreement for procuring 3 straddle carriers.”

He said, “92 percent of the export and import of Bangladesh is being conducted through the Chattogram sea port. We handled a total of 98 percent of our containers in the current year, while Mongla port handled only 2 percent of containers.”

Terming Chattogram Port the nerve of the country’s economy, he urged to all to cooperate in continuing the smooth operation of the port.

Omar Faruk, Secretary to the CPA said, “a number of projects have increased the ports inner berth, besides, construction of new north yard beside Rubi cement and procurement of heavy modern handling equipment helped to break all previous records in container handling.

CPA has introduced strict limits on how long a ship may remain in port, aiming at quicker loading and unloading of containers to reduce acute congestion and improve productivity during the period, he added.

He said, “Chattogram Port obtained the 71st position among 100 ports of the world in container handling from the earlier position of 87.
