New berth at Batangas Container Terminal to boost port’s capacity

Tuesday, 30 April 2019 | 16:00

A new berth at the Batangas Container Terminal that will significantly increase the harbor’s capacity for mooring vessels was inaugurated Monday.

It was the second berth of the Batangas Container Terminal in Sta. Clara, Batangas City, according to Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero.

It is a 250-meter extension of the first berth. With its opening, the port now has a total of 600 meters of berth capable of handling over 450,000 twenty-footer containers annually.

The previously lone berth was only able to accommodate 300,000 20-footer containers annually.

The extended berthing area for the port, according to Guerrero, is aimed at achieving a “bigger, better and smarter trade solution for Southern Luzon.”

Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez, who also attended the inauguration ceremony, said that the additional berth complements the Port of Manila and will resolve the port congestion at the Manila port.

He added that the project would shape the economic development of the country to be more inclusive which is the primary goal of the government’s infrastructure program.
‬The project was funded by DP World and will be operated by the Asian Terminal Incorporated.

Guerrero pointed out that the project was in line with the government’s Build, Build, Build (BBB) infrastructure program to modernize and enhance the country’s trading facilities.

Guerrero, Dominguez, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, and Port of Batangas District Collector Edward Ibera were present during the inauguration ceremony.
