Black Sea Container Market Grew by 12.75% During 2017

Black Sea container terminals of Ukraine, Romania, Russia, Georgia and Bulgaria handled 2 752 709 TEU in 2017, including empty containers, excluding transshipment.

This review observes only full containers of the region – 2 013 048 TEU. Total growth achieved by these five countries in 2017 was 12,74%, compared to the same period last year.

In 2017, there was a laden container turnover increase in all countries of the Black Sea region. The highest growth was achieved by Russia and Georgia – 22,06% and 17,61%. At the same time, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania have achieved 8,90%, 8,12% and 7,60% grow7h of laden container turnover respectively.

During this period, 54,28% of laden containers were imported, with 45,72% of the volume being exported. It is estimated that laden container share was 73,13% and empty container share was 26,87%.

Export volumes from the aforementioned countries increased by 5,99% compared to 2016. Russia achieved significant volume growth of export volume – 18,10%. Ukraine suffered 2,47% decrease of laden export volume, while Romania, Georgia and Bulgaria achieved growth of 7,09%, 5,99% and 5,80 respectively. Import to the region increased by 19,13%, mainly because of Russian and Ukrainian import volume growth of 24,81% and 22,92%. Import volume of Georgia, Bulgaria and Romania increased by 19,72%, 10,93% and 8,40% respectively.

Thus the percentage of laden volume handled by each country in 2017 distributed as follows: Ukraine – 28,85%, Russia (Black Sea) – 26,98%, Romania – 23,85%, Georgia – 11,41%, Bulgaria – 8,91%.

In 2017, top-five container terminals of the region have changed their positions by total volume: DPW (Constanta, Romania) still was on the first place, CTO Ukraine (Odessa) moved from the second to the fourth place, APMT Poti (Georgia) moved from the third place to the second, NUTEP (Novorossiysk, Russia) moved from the fourth to the third place and NLE (Novorossiysk, Russia) remained fifth. All of these terminals achieved volume growth in 2017 compared to 2016.

As for the leading carriers of the region, there were some changes – MAERSK still was a leader, followed by MSC, ARKAS, COSCOCS and CMA CGM. ARKAS overcame CMA CGM and became third largest carrier of the region. Because of a merger between CSCL and COSCO, the united carrier became fourth largest carrier at the Black Sea. All these carriers controlled 73,38% of this market.

In 2016 the total market share of Maersk and MSC was 44,65%, but in 2017 it has decreased by 0,20 p.p. to 44,45%. At the same time, the total share of CMA CGM and COSCOCS was 18,04% in 2016, while in 2017 it has increased by 0,61 p.p. and stated 18,65%. It is also worth to note that in 2017 against 2016 CMA CGM has lost 1,24 p.p. of market share, while COSCOCS has increased its share by 1,85 p.p. and it has allowed COSCOCS to become fourth largest carrier in the Black Sea region. PIL has suspended its activity at the Black Sea.
