Port Klang can become among world’s 10 best ports: Transport Ministry

Thursday, 01 November 2018 | 00:00

The Transport Ministry is working to enhance Port Klang’s operations efficiency to make it one of the top 10 best ports in the world, its minister Anthony Loke said yesterday.

Port Klang is currently ranked the world’s 12th best container port.

“We are sure that the target can be achieved if the efficiency aspect is (focussed upon), especially (in the area of) acceptance and release of cargo.

“Port Klang is located strategically in the middle of the Straits of Melaka. However, foreign shipping companies still choose Singapore, because it has an efficient cargo management system.

“In Malaysia, I was made to understand that there are 28 cargo operations agencies. Therefore, (to compete with Singapore) we will introduce a single agency to manage the entire cargo operations of the Port.

“This will improve efficiency,” he said at a press conference after attending the first National Shipping and Port Council (NSPC) gathering at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) here, today.

The Ministry is also looking at improving operations at other major ports in the country, including Tanjung Pelepas, Pulau Pinang, Kuantan, Kemaman and Bintulu.

As sea ports are among Malaysia’s most important assets, the ministry will work to ensure that they realise their full potential, Loke added.

The NSPC will also work in tandem with the ministry to expand the domestic shipping sector.

“This sector could offer an array of job opportunities. But its potential has not been fully explored. There are more areas that need to be developed, especially in downstream industries,” Loke said, adding that the NSPC will also help the ministry identify maritime laws and ordinances which need to be amended.

He said many maritime laws need to be amended to ensure that Malaysia’s shipping industry stays in tune with changing times.
