Iraq will start work on second and third phases of Al-Faw Grand Port mega project in Basra once the 2020 budget gets parliamentary approval, a government official said.

Mudher Mohammed Saleh, financial advisor to the Iraqi government told Zawya Projects that projects would be developed in partnership with the private sector.

He said the second phase consists of logistics infrastructure for port and maritime transport operations, stores, offices for transport operators, insurance firms and banks, and hotels.

The third phase, he continued, would include a residential city that can accommodate up to a half a million people with integrated infrastructure such schools, healthcare and desalination and power plants.

In November 2013, Korean media had reported that Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) was awarded a $693 million contract by the General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI) to build a breakwater for the port. In May 2019, it was awarded a $200 million contract by GPCI to build the port’s container terminal followed by a $70.35 million order in September to build a 14.5-kilometre road.
