Black Sea Container Market Review 9m 2016

Black Sea container terminals of Ukraine, Romania, Russia, and Bulgaria handled 1,839,869 TEU in 9m 2016, including empty containers, excluding transshipment.

This review observes only full containers of the region – 1 330 626 TEU. Total growth achieved by these five countries for the period was 9,64% compared to the same period last year.

The largest increases were in Ukraine and Romania. After 9m 2016 Ukraine, Romania, Russia and Bulgaria achieved 32,52%, 7,11%, 5,68% and 4,37% growth of laden container turnover respectively, while Georgia suffered 15,25% decrease.

During this period, 50,96% of full containers handled were imported, with 49,04% of the volume being exported. It is estimated that laden containers share was 72,32% and empty containers share was 27,68%.

Export volumes from the aforementioned countries increased by 13,83% compared to 9m 2015. The highest export volume increase was shown by Ukraine and Russia – 31,89% and 27,58% respectively. In Georgia and Bulgaria there was a decrease of 18,24% and 0,9% respectively. Imports to the region increased by 5,89%, mainly because of Ukrainian import volume increase of 33,31%. There was an increase of laden Import volume in all countries of the region except Georgia and Russia, they suffered volume drop of 14,68% and 6,31% respectively.

Thus the percentage of laden volume handled by each country in 9m 2016 distributed as follows: Ukraine – 29,86%, Romania – 25,50%, Russia (Black Sea) – 24,56%, Georgia – 10,78%, Bulgaria – 9,30%.

The top-five container terminals of the region in 9m 2016 changed their positions in total volumes handled: DPW (Constanta, Romania) still was on the first place, HPC Ukraine (Odessa, Ukraine) overcame APMT Poti (Georgia) and became second largest terminal at the Black Sea, while APMT Poti moved to the third place, NLE (Novorossyisk, Russia) moved from the fourth to the fifth place and NUTEP (Novorossiysk, Russia) moved from the fifth to the fourth place. All of these terminals except APMT Poti (Georgia) achieved volume growth in 9m 2016 compared to 9m 2015.

As for the leading carriers of the region, MAERSK still was a leader, MSC was the second largest, while ARKAS and ZIM were fourth and fifth largest carriers of the region. These carriers controlled 73,58% of this market.

Since the middle of 2014 the service of former G6 was re-built (Hapag Lloyd, OOCL, MOL, NYK, HMM, APL). Thus, OOCL moved to ABX service (ZIM) and G6 alliance became G5. In 9m 2015 G5 members controlled 4,41% of total laden container market share, however in 9m 2016 G5 members controlled only 3,88% of total laden container market share. At the same time in 9m 2015 OOCL had 1,88% of market share, but in 9m 2016 its share decreased by 0,01 p.p. and stated 1,87%.

In Q1 2015 2M (Maersk and MSC) and Ocean Three (CMA CGM, CSCL, UASC) alliances started their activity in the Black Sea region. In 9m 2015 total market share of Maersk and MSC was 47,02%, but in 9m 2016 it has decreased by 2,25 p.p. to 44,77%. In 9m 2015 total laden container market share of Ocean Three alliance members was 15,22%, but in 9m 2016 it grown by 1,60 p.p. to 16,82%.
